★ Canon Photo 5 Competition, now open for rego

I just received this press release through, and I know I get quite a bit of photography related traffic so I figured I would pass this on for my Australian photographer friends.

Canon Australia is calling for entries for its annual national Photo5 photographic competition.

Open to both professionals and amateurs, Photo5 encourages creativity and innovation, and inspires participants to ‘think outside the box’ – literally. The competition is centered around five every day objects that are sent in a cardboard box to people who register at The challenge is for people to photograph each object in a creative way and then upload it to the Photo5 website.

“In creative photography, even the most mundane object can be the starting point to something amazing,” states Chris Macleod, Brand Manager – EOS. “Photo5 encourages people to look at the world differently, to get more creative and to have fun with their digital SLR. Last year we were blown away with the level of creativity from all participants and we can’t wait to see what’s in store this year.”

Last year, the Photo5 objects included chalk, yellow dots, blue cellophane, a red balloon and the cardboard box itself. This year’s objects are under wraps and wont’ be revealed until participants register and receive the box in the post.

Last year Canon limited registration to 2,500 entrants, but have opened the competition up to 10,000 people in 2008 given its popularity. Canon has also upped the ante this year with a prize package valued at over $50,000.

Until the 30th of September, anyone with an interest in photography and a flair for creativity can register for the competition at Spaces are limited so people should register for free as soon as they can.

Meet The Judges:

  • David Anderson, a professional photographer in Australia who has shot for Australian Idol as well as assignments for the likes of U2 and the Rolling Stones.
  • Darren Ryan, Assistant General Manager of Marketing for Canon’s Consumer Imaging Products Group.
  • Montalbetti & Campbell, a unique multi award-winning duo specialising in photographing unique portraits.

I’ve already registered, and I’d imagine the entry box will be in the mail shortly. I’d encourage anyone in Australia, with an SLR to register for the Canon Photo5 competition asap!
